Industrial Engineers look at the big picture of what makes society perform best. We design optimal combinations of people, information, materials, and equipment that produce innovative and efficient organizations. We work and consult in every industry, including communications, ecommerce, entertainment, finance, food, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, sports, travel, and transportation. We focus on information-intensive, technology-based industries.

IEOR stands for "Industrial Engineering and Operations Research". The second half of this name refers to powerful mathematical techniques that help us solve complex problems. Industrial Engineers are in increasing demand as information and systems become more complex.

The 21st Century Industrial Engineer understands both management and operations from a scientific perspective. Berkeley's program provides a strong mathematical background, including material on financial engineering, decision theory, queueing theory, game theory, database theory, numerical simulation, scheduling, reliability, and quality control. Industrial Engineers use computers as tools to solve complex problems and work with the most powerful computer software available. We use these skills to design, quantify, predict, and evaluate the performance of all types of complex systems, from amusement parks to websites to cutting edge computer chip fabrication lines.

IE is also the branch of Engineering most closely related to human resources: we apply social skills to work with all types of employees, from engineers to salespeople to top management. Writing and presentation skills are very important for us. We measure employee aptitude and motivation to encourage communication, morale, and leadership. We study Japanese management techniques such as kaizen, Theory Z, just-in-time delivery, Taguchi methods, and the kanban. We design intuitive computer interfaces. Many IE courses involve teamwork. Many of us go on to become top managers and CEOs.
